Hashtags have become so popular for breaking down communities Instagram has implemented a new feature.

You can now follow hashtags just like users! 

Even more reason as to why it is so important to start ranking on Instagrams top posts. So you want to get into the top 9 posts on Instagram right?

There is a two step strategy to achieving this.

Most people go for the large and most popular hashtags but that is a no no! Especially if you are a start up account. Your hashtag will go to waste. Why?  You are going to get lost in the feed of millions of users who are also trying to catch the attention of that hashtags audience. The key is:

You want to be able to out rank other accounts.

If no one can see you then your opportunity to go viral is very low.  To do that you need to go niche.

I like to spice up my hashtag recipe with:

  1. 2:3 smaller hashtags being 50k and under
  2. 1:3 popular, trending or viral instagram hashtags.

To help you decide on how large or small to go simply:

  1. Look at how many likes the top posts have on them. That will give you an indicator on whether you need to move to a smaller hashtag to gain that precious real-estate.

In the above hashtags I have applied the three tier hashtag strategy. When we go to view the hashtag #aerialdancer on the bottom left hand photo we can see that in the top posts there are features with only 58 likes. As my average engagement is over 2.2k likes I can safely assume that I will hit the top posts here.

 

It does take a little bit of time to curate your hashtag strategy for Instagram but it is well worth it. I have a range of hashtag strategies that I use depending on what I am posting about for instance, flexibility, acro yoga or aerial arts. Once I have finished my research I like to save all of my hashtags for Instagram in my notes folder so that I can easily cut and paste them into my scheduled posts making it fast and painless.

So now that we have planned our hashtag strategy we need to move on to the second part of our winning viral strategy which is boosting our engagement levels on Instagram so that we are moving up into the top 9 posts and the explore feed.

Boost your post with Instagram Likes

What is an Instagram post worth?The second step is to get those likes! Wait a minute isn’t that why we are here? Yes, so you need to boost your engagement quickly when you release a new post on Instagram. The faster the engagement rate the more likely your post will be featured in your followers news feed.  Instagram’s algorithm will deem the activity as high ranking content. We also know we need to get a certain number of likes for top posts.

How to achieve a high level of likes on Instagram

You can achieve this by joining an engagement pod. An engagement pod is where users comment or like each others content. You need to remember that the purpose of the pod is not for vanity likes. It is to rank your content, so that you are going viral in the top posts. Think about when your pitching your account for a brand deal Impressions and Reach are important metrics to track to show the amount of engagement your content generates.

For example, getting 25 engagements on 1000 impressions is much different than getting 25 engagements on 10,000 impressions. Visibility metrics help add context.

Engagements are probably the most tracked metric for social media marketing.  You do need to assess whether they’re driving actual value for your business? This goes back to building a community that is engaged with your brand and you are having meaningful conversations. For instance are people talking to you about your Instagrams niche or are you just getting spammy bot messages. My personal account is a fitness account so I get lots of comments about how to achieve certain circus tricks or flexibility levels. It’s very important to measure website visits so that you can identify where your social strategy fits in with your digital strategy. You can also gain insightful data by looking at the amount of pages your social traffic visits and how long they spend there. This will help you determine what type of social media content is converting and what is not. Then you know what to make more of!

 5. Conversions

A great way to measuring conversions from social media is in Google Analytics. It is a  free analytical tool that can track what your traffic is doing. For instance it can track where your user came from and what sale or conversion was made on your site. This will help you decide where to spend your time building an effective audience that takes your desired action. That could be buying a product or signing up for an ebook or newsletter.

I recommend getting familiar with Google Analytics so that you can start tying conversions to your social media efforts.

So now that we have our statistics we can show the value of our brand. Now it is time to build your media kit so you can start pitching your Instagram account.

Here is a good format:

  1. Blog description: If you have a blog that you have connected with your Instagram account. Include a brief description, the general theme or niche and the type of content you write. Make sure you add your audience demographics.
  2. Social Media Traffic statistics: Be sure to include numbers for monthly unique visitors, reach, website conversions, social media followers (including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, You Tube, Google+, and Instagram, if applicable).
  3. Opportunities available: When working with brands you don’t want to compromise your own brands integrity. It is important to describe to potential advertisers the various ways in which you are willing to work with them. Ensure that you include the benefits of each, as well as pricing info. A few ideas are: Sponsored posts and sponsored giveaways.
  4. Contact information: Consider setting up a specific email address just for advertising requests.
  5. References or testimonials: I like to showcase a few examples of my sponsored posts in the past so that brands can see the quality of the content they can expect. Also a few sentences from previous advertisers about their experience working with you can be a nice touch if you have additional space.

You need to have a good pitch in your email with your media kit in order to get the brand interested in even opening your kit. Here is an example of an email pitch we have used in the past.
